FIRE AT MOSGIEL SCHOOL
DOG GIVES TIMELY WARNING PROMPT ACTION BY BRIGADE When flames and smoke burst from the rear of a wooden building at the Mosgiel District. High School at 4.5 a.m. yesterday a nearby, resident’s dog became alarmed and the animal’s whining and barking awakened its owner, who, immediately sent a call to the local volunteer fire brigade. The bx-igade arrived on the scene with such despatch as to confine the, blaze to a small area.
The fire, which was the result of spontaneous combustion in a bin of slack coal stored for central heating purposes in the furnace room, soon spread to the outside wall and ceiling'. The brigade worked quickly and effectively, and the fire was confined to the furnace room., • Water caused slight damage to the ceilings of the administrative block. ,
The brigade’s work is all the more commendable when it is considered that 700 ft of hose had to be run out from the nearest hydrant point.
