MIXED MARRIAGES
CONDEMNED BY CATHOLIC BISHOP LONDON, October 18. Preaching at Hastings. last night, Dr Amigo,’ the Roman Catholic Bisnop of Southwark, after saying, that he | deplored the prevalence of marriages I between 1 Roman. Catholics and Protestants, said: “We do not want mixed marriages, but for different reasons from Dr Garbett’s. We want faith to be strong in the hearts of Catholic people, and we feel that faith is weakened by mixed marriages.” He added: “If there, are mixed marriages we rightly insist, and shall continue to insist, that all the children shall be brought up as Catholics, and that the Protestant party shall not interefere with the Catholic party’s religion.” [The Archbishop of York, Dr C. F. Garbett, addressing the full Synod of the Convocation of York, warned Anglicans contemplating marriage with Roman Catholics against signing away their rights over possible children. Dr Garbett: said that the Roman Catholic Church only recognised such mixed marriages if taken in the presence of a Roman Catholic priest, who would not attend unless the parents signed a declaration that thg children would be baptised into the Roman Catholic Church.]
