FIRE POLICE
USE OUTSIDE SALVAGE WORK UillOti OBJECTION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct.'2o. A protest against the members of tho Wellington fire police, an honorary body, being used to fight fires was made by Mr L. Glover, a member of the Wellington Fire Board and secretary of the Fire Brigadesmen’s Union, at" a meeting of the board. If they were so used he would have to bring them under the awards, said Mr Glover. He suggested getting the matter in order by dearly defining the .position. Mr C; A. Woolley, the'superintendent, said the fire police did not take part in fighting fires, but during the recent big fire they did help, in managing one of the leads. Surely it was only natural that they should be permitted to give a band when the firemen were under pressure. Mr Glover said the police were only concerned in salvage and should be given a clear perception of their duties. If they were to be allowed to assist in fighting fires, they would have to he placed in a-different category. On the suggestion of the chairman, Mr S. S. Dean, Mr Glover was to talk the matter out with the superintendent.
