DEATH STALKS IN EUROPE
CAN UNRRA REPRIEVE MILLIONS CONDEMNED? APPEAL FOR MORE SUPPORT (Rec. 12.35 p.m.) LONDON, January 25. A large number of people would be condemned to death unless the world, through Unrra ; could somehow alleviate conditions in Europe, said Mr Noel Baker, addressing the Economic and Financial Committee of the United Nations. , He added that 30,000,000 Europeans were at present living on, a maximum diet of 1,500 calories daily, and in a great many instances their diet was down to a thousand calories daily. Never in history had there baen such a grave situation. Never before had there been a relative failure of crops on five continents during one period of war. Unless Unrra was supported, an unimaginable catastrophe would come over Europe. Mr Noel Baker announced his acceptance df an amendment put by Senator Connally (U.S.) to the United Kingdom motion on support for Unrra. The resolution urged all the signatories to the Unrra agreement to contribute with the least possible delay a further 1 per cent, of their national income, and also urged non-signatories to join in the Unrra organisation, and asked for periodic reports on the work of Unrra. South Africa opposed the resolution on the ground that drought had affected her ability to help, but said she would reconsider it if the situation became worse. The Danish delegate said Denmark preferred a resolution which did not commit ex-occupied countries to ,a specifio contribution. The meeting ended without decision.
