BANDIT GANGS

ROUND-UP ORDERED IN MALAYA SINGAPORE, December 27. Hundreds of infantrymen of the Twenty-fifth Indian Division have launched a major round-up of gangs of bandits, which for months have been terrorising civilians along the jungleclad lower reaches of the Jerak River, says the ‘ Straits Times.’ The drive was ordered after the bandits abducted six civilians, beat them to death, and threw the bodies down the shaft of a tin mine. Indian veterans of the Arakan campaign in Burma made a four-lxour trip down the river in landing craft, ordered out the villagers for identification parades, and made a number of arrests.
