STARVATION RIFE

FOOD SUPPLIES EN ROUTE (Rec. noon.) BATAVIA, October 19. Four million Indonesians died of starvation under the Japanese rule, according to Dr Van Hoogstraton, director of economic affairs for the Netherlands Indies. Seventy thousand tons of foodstuffs and clothing purchased from the American army in the South-west Pacific were en route for the relief of Indonesians. The present rice crop would last until December 15, after which great quantities of food must be imported. Dr Hoogstraton added that British and American companies owning millions of dollars’ Worth of oil and rubber properties in the Netherlands Indies were already planning to take over and re-establish their enterprises.
