AMERICA’S POLICY
PREPARED TO HELP PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT
NEW YORK, October 10.
. Mr John Vincent, director of the State Department’s Office for Far Eastern Affairs, in a speech said: “We do not intend to insist or participate in the forceful imposition of . French and Dutch control in Indo-China-and the Netherlands East Indies, but we would be prepared to assist efforts to reach peaceful agreements in those areas.” Regarding Korea, Mr Vincent said that at present the division between Russian and American troops was manifestly unsatisfactory, and it was proposed that there should be an international trusteeship of the Allies principally interested until the Koreans were ready to assume the administration. He added that America’s policy was to co-operate with China and Russia for stability in the Far East, but she would not co-operate with either in a policy antagonistic to the other. The United States recognised that Russia had an important interest in the Far East, but expected Russia to recognise that the United States also had important interests there.
