EXPLODED BY PILFERERS

AMMUNITION DUMP IN ITALY (Rec. 11 a.m.) ROME, August 31. Pilferers touched off over 1,000 tons of German ammunition in a dump at Monfalcone, killing at least six Italians. Gangs had been raiding the dumps in quest of the silk in which the charges * were wrapped, which fetched high prices on the black market.

An explosion in an ammunition train in South Ancouia, which destroyed six wagons and damaged adjacent property, is believed to have caused 600 casualties. Unauthorised travellers smoking on the train are blamed.
