DISABLED SERVICEMAN

RE-ESTABLISHMENT LEAGUE

At the monthly meeting olf the Disabled Servicemen's Re-establishment League there were present Messrs S. B Smith (chairman), A. Duncan, L. F. Evans, G. L. Ferguson, C. J. Hayward, W. Hudson, S. D. Macpherson, J. H. D. Miller, H. McDowell Smith, W. K. Watson,' W. Small (district officer), . and C. W. Batten (from headquarters). The District Officer reported that the turnover from all departments had been very satisfactory, the volume of production from' the leather factory having been exceeded only on" one occasion. The shop returns continued to be satisfactory, and Mr N. Oliphant. had; now.been placed in charge. DEVELOPMENTS AT CENTRE. In regard to the suggestion _ that" umbrella repairing might be a suitable occupation for badly-disabled men, it was Reported that the \diffieulty ot securing fabrfc aif-th'e presSht tii&e was: very great;" It was; respired to make further inquiries. The District Officer reported that several hundred yards of soil had been obtained tfor the grounds and a lawn was now being put down. The question of financing the erection of a potting shed and glasshouse was considered. Mr D. Tannock had kindly undertaken the supervision of the laying out and development of the grounds, a work in which the members of the Gardening Circle of the Otago Women's Club were interesting themselves. '.■'.-" Headquarters advised that the annual conference would be held on June 14 and .15, .ar.d the chairman and Messrs Hayward and Evans were appointed delegates. The architect (Mr Smith) produced a plan of the. proposed lay-out of the dust-extraction, plant, and advised that the work of installation would be 'put in Hand at an early date. ANNUAL MEETING. At the close of the monthly, meeting the annual meeting was held. The annual report showed that the number of men ifrom the present war who were in training at March 31 w'as 22, and that 13 had completed training during the year and had gone out into employment. The gross turnover from the sale of league products was - extremely satisfactory, being much in advance of the previous year. The manufacture of clogs was firmly established, the expenditure incurred in the development of .this activity being fully warranted. The woodwork factory showed a substantial advance, and with the installation of the machines now coming to hand it was reaBonable to assume that the figures •would be still more satisfactory. The committee' expressed its indebtedness to the various organisations and firms which had afforded very substantial assistance in the course olf the year. The following office-bearers were elected:—Chairman, Mr S. B. Smith; vice-chairman, Mr A. Duncan; Finance Committee—Messrs S. B. Smith, A. Duncan. L. F. Evans, C. J.Havward, and S. D. Macpherson; Executive Committee—the chairman, vice-chairman, and Messrs Evans, Hayward, and Macpherson.

Mr Batten, a member of the Headquarters Committee and the Rehabilitation Board, gave a talk on matters of interest.
