OPHTHALMIC SPECIALIST

APPOINTED TO DUNEDIN HOSPITAL EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN EGYPT The appointment of Dr Rowland P. Wilson, M.8.E., a noted ophthalmic specialist, who lias been in practice in Egypt for nearly 20 years, as full-time ophthalmic surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital, aws announced at a meeting of the Otago Hospital Board last night 'by the chairman (Dr D. G. McMillan). Dr Wilson, who was born in "Wellington 49 years ago, will take up his appointment as soon as he can reach New Zealand. Dr Wilson was educated at Wellington College, Victoria University College, and Edinburgh University. He attained the degrees of B.Sc. at Edinburgh in 1920, M. 8., Ch.B. in 1922, and was elected F.R.C.S. in 1925. He has been director of the Memorial Ophthalmic Laboratory at Giza, Cairo, since 1926, honorary surgeon at Fuad First Government Ophthalmic Hospital at Cairo, lecturer in ophthalmic medicine and surgery. at Cairo University since 1940, lecturer in post-graduate medical and surgical ophthalmology for Government ophthalmic hospitals from 1926 to 1940, and examiner in the faculty of medicine at' Cairo for the diploma of ophthalmic medicine and surgery and M. 8., Ch.B. He previously held appointments in Edinburgh and Carlisle. He served in the last wax, and in the present war has been officer commanding civilian medical services in Cairo since 1939.

A number of. other appointments were made, and resignations accepted at the meeting. The resignations of Dr Stephen Barclay, resident surgical officer, and Dr John Fulton, acting surgical registrar, were accepted. Dr P. W. S. Riley was appointed acting surgical registrar, and _Dr N. H. North was appointed acting gynaecological and obstetrical registrar. The chairman (Dr D. G.'McMillan) announced that on their early release from Army duties, Drs D C. Cuddie and W. J. Boyd would join the staff of the medical unit early next month, thereby "bringing the unit up to full strength. Dr Raymond Kirk had returned from military service, and Dr W„ J. Porteous, who had acted for him, was thanked for-his services.
