WALCHEREN ISLAND
COMPLETE ISOLATION IMMINENT ANOTHER BREACH TORN IN DYKE (Rec. 12.10 p.m.} LONDON, Oct. 8. The complete isolation of Walcheren appears imminent as Canadian troops cover the last 2,000 yards to the railway and causeway linking the island with the Dutch mainland, says Reuter's correspondent at Twenty-first Army Group headquarters. General Crerar's men already hold positions dominating the highway, but the island is powerfully defended and there seems no doubt that the Germans have been ordered to hold out to the last in an effort to deny the use of Antwerp port to the Allies. (R.A.F. bombers last night tore" another breach of 150 yaids.in the dyke. Flight-lieutenant Owen R. Chapman, of Timaru, who photographed the attack from a reconnaissance Spitfire, told Reuter's correspondent with the Second Tactical Air Force in Belgium: " The water poured in this time, instead of Oozing in as on the previous occasion. Large areas were quickly flooded." Berlin radio declared that Allied air raids had completed the demolition work carried out by the Germans in Dunkirk, leaving the town a heap of rubble.
