SIX TO EIGHT PLACES CLEARED PATTON'S NEW OFFENSIVE (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 8. The Americans in their new offensive between Metz and Nancy have already cleared six to .eight places and advanced six miles at some points. They took 700 Germans prisoner, says Reuter's correspondent with the American Third Army. Opposition so far has been light. The general arc ! of' the offensive is 15 miles north and north-east of Nancy. The absence of determined German resistance is attributable to American heavy artillery, which pounded the enemy lines before the dawn attack. The Americans are taking full advantage of excellent weather. A British United Press correspondent says the big thrust gained control of the heights between Ajoncourt and Jean de la Incourt, about 10 miles north-east of Nancy;
