BRITISH CABINET CRISIS

AVERTED BY MR CHURCHILL Pre»s Association—By Telegraph—Copyright (Rec. 8 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 7. Mr Churchill's action in withdrawing one of: the compensation clauses in the Town and Country Replanning Bill averted a sudden, last-minute crisis which, looming in the House of Commons, might nave spread to the Cabinet, says the ' Daily Mail's ' political correspondent. The situation developed when a number of Conservatives announced their opposition to . a clause providing that compensation for land taken over for public purposes should be based on 1939 values. Labour members of the Cabinet, when the. matter came before them, declared they could not agree to any modification .of the principle underlying this clause. They seem to have admitted ambiguity of the clause, however, thus enabling Mr Churchill to suggest the clause should be withdrawn and redrafted as part of a separate Bill. An important fact is that the Labour Ministers, particularly Mr Ernest Bev'in, .have again threatened to resign from the Government. An election atmosphere is clearly developing within the Government.
