ELECTION DECISION

ST. KILDA COUNCIL'S OBJECTION An unusual resolution for a borough council to consider was introduced at St. Kilda last night when Cr E. Longworth moved—" That this meeting ot the St. Kilda Borough Council regrets; the recent decision of the Government - to bold an election this year, and calls upon the Prime Minister and his col-; leagues to reconsider their views, to concentrate wholeheartedly on the war effort of this Dominion, and avoid, it possible, plunging the country into political chaos during the present ' Cr Longworth said that he had not been connected at any time with any political party, but he felt that the matter was one of national importance. Cr Cherrv seconded the motion, after which" considerable discussion took place. Several councillors expressed the opinion that though they were personally in agreement with the resolution they felt it was not a matter in which a borough council had any right to interfere. When the motion was put to the meeting five councillors (Messrs E. Lortgworth, J. C. Cherry, R. S. Brent. D Telfer, and A. H. Finnie) voted for it and the other five (Messrs G. Glue, T' D. B. Row W. Rutherford, H. H. Johnson, and'P. J. B. Rendel) against it. The mayor (Mr N. D. Anderson) then gave his deliberative vote in favour of the motion and declared it carried.
