LORD GALWAY'S DEATH
PRIME MINISTER'S TRIBUTE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 29. "I am sure I voice the deep sorrow of all the people of New. Zealand at the sad news received to-day of the death of Lord Galway," said the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser. " During his six years as Governor-General he greatly endeared himself to all sections of the people, and never failed to take the keenest interest in everything affecting the well-being and progress of the Dominion." Mr Fraser paid a particularly glowing tribute to Lord Galway's deep concern in the welfare of the Maori people and his work in connection with the National Patriotic Fund. " I met Lord Galway again in 1941 while I was in London," Mr Fraser concluded,' " and I could not fail to be impressed with his continued interest in the welfare of this Dominion and with the manner in which he was devoting himself to the duties he had assumed with the War Office. His services to New Zealand will long be remembered by the people—Maori and pakeha alike." In a telegram to the Secretary of State for the Dominions, Mr C. R. Attlee, Mr Fraser conveyed to Lady Galway and her family the heartfelt sympathy of the Government and people of New Zealand. " During his term of office," Mr Fraser said, "Lord Galway demonstrated qualities of heart and mind which endeared him greatly to all sections of the people. Thev will deeply mourn the passing of a Governor-General who had their welfare so much at heart, and of one who so worthily upheld the dignity and traditions of his high office."
