EASTER WORK
QUESTION OF PAYMENT (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April .1. In a statement to-night, the Minister' of Labour, Mr P. 0. Webb, emphasised the War Cabinet’s decision that work should proceed on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Easter Monday on defence works and in certain essential industries where the controller concerned has given notice. On defence construction work covered by the Defence Works Labour Legislation Suspension Order, 1942, the workers will receive the special flat rate prescribed in the order for work performed on holidays. As some misunderstanding appeared to exist regarding the effect of the order as to payment for/ work on holidays, an amending order' - was gazetted to-night. This makes it clear that payment on the flat rate basis for work actually performed is the only payment to he made., In the case of all other work, payment for work on holidays should be based on the appropriate award rate, subject, of course, to (ho Overtime and Holidays Labour Legislation Suspension Order, which reduces .reble time payments to double time,.
