BEACH TRAGEDY

RESCUER LOSES HIS LIFE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 26. In attempting to help two children in difficulties in a strong undertow at Murawai Beach yesterday afternoon Richard Hopkins (21), of Avondale, was drowned.

S. W. Jones, of Huapai, first went to the rescue of the children, but found it difficult to hold them. Hopkins went to his assistance, but was almost immediately caught in the undertow. A.young woman swam to his assistance, but the line parted from the swimmer’s harness and Hopkins disappeared. The other four persons in the water reached shore suffering only slight, illeffects. Hopkins’s body has not yet been recovered.
