Messrs C. Stanley Smith, S. D. Smith, and W R. Sinclair left by the north express this morning to attend a conference of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association at Wellington.. Wing-commander G. L. Stedman left by the express this morning up his duties as commanding officer of the R.N.Z.A.F. station at Rongotai. Mr F. G. Duncan was a passenger* en route to Wellington, by the north express to-day. Advice has been received that Lieutenant R. P. Williams is reported miss-1 ing, believed prisoner of war, and that Private J. L. Lunam is a prisoner of war in Crete. Dr B. H. Howard returned on Saturday from an Air Training Corps instructional course at a northern aerodrome. Lieutenant J. P. Monaghan, railway transport officer for the Otago military area, has been promoted to the rank of full lieutenant.

Mr John Philp, who began his duties as superintendent of the Invercargill Fire Brigade to-day, has been connected with fire brigades in New Zealand since 1926. Mr Philp was born in Scotland 40 years ago, and came to New Zealand! in i 926. He joined the Wellington Fire Brigade in that year as a probationer fireman, and subsequently rose through the various ranks and executive post* tions to become deputy-superintendent in 1939. He is the holder of associate and full members’ diplomas of the Officers and Members’ Institute of Fire Engineers (N.Z.), and is a graduate and associate member of the Institute of Fire Engineers, Great Britain. In the latter examination he had the honour of heading the overseas list. latest registrations at the Grand Hotel include Mr H. M. Finlay (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Stewart Gibson (Palmerston North).
