OBITUARY
MR LEICESTER MATSON (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 24. A prominent figure in the stock and station business in Canterbury for over 50 years, Mr Leicester Matson died in Christchurch this morning. Mr Matson was 73 years of age. He was well known as a judge of livestock, and was an auctioneer of wide repute. In his early days he was a well-known athlete, and competed in various sports meetings with outstanding success. Later in life he took a keen interest in racing and trotting.
MR C. J. FOLEY Probably the last member of tha “ old-time ” compositors in the Dominion, Mr C. J. Foley passed away to-day at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr E. Webber, Prince Albert road. Mr Foley was 91 years five of age. He used to delight in recounting his early Dunedin experiences to a larga circle of friends. A compositor by trade, he came originally from Auckland and worked in Oamaru for a' time before coming on to Dunedin, when he joined the staff of f the ‘ Otago Daily Times.’ Ho remained there for between 40 and 50 years until he retired. He did not take an active part in local affairs outside his immediate connections. His wife pre-deceased him 23 years ago, and he leaves a family of four daughters and three sons.
