HOW GERMANY FINANCES WAR [From Oue London Correspondent.] It is often asked how on earth Germany is financing her war effort. The answer, apart from Hitler’s ingenious barter arrangements, may be found in the German levy on all “ occupied countries. Wherever the German army is located in Europe outside Germany the people concerned have to pay for its upkeep. The total levy amounts to an annual sum of well over £1.000,000.000. This must show a very handsome profit on Hitler’s overhead charges for garrisoning neutral ami other lands. It is worth recalling in this connection that the sum Germany is thus extracting from helpless subject territories is more than five times the total of the war indemnity that Germany after 1918 whined she could not pay, and which we so kindly remitted. It'is said that Germans have no sense of humour. Yet it is hard not to believe they must ho laughing at us today when they recall how we were led up the international garden after 1918. Have we learnt our lesson yet?
