AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY OF OTAGO

The lady members ot the Australian Society met in the Strand Salon on Wednesday last, this being the final afternoon gathering of the 1940 season. Mrs H. A. Newall (lady president), wearing a navy and white georgette ensemble, received the guests. The lounge was tastefully decorated with bowls of tulips, and an excellent programme was arranged, interspersed with competitions The prize-winners were Mesclames Edsall, J. Harrison, H. Johnston, and Gilbert. The lucky teacup winner was Airs A. Ormond. The opportunity was taken to present Mrs Newall with a beautiful bouquet. Mrs A. Martin, who made the presentation, in a well-chosen speech, made special mention of the work to aid refugee children which had been accomplished by. tka society,, ahjjr, M hy. ika ent&j.

siasm of Mrs Newall. The work of Mrs E. W Chandler, who, during the past year, has performed the duties of secretary of the ladies’ committee, was also recognised, l a presentation being made. During the afternoon, Mesdames W. White and John Hamer presented a sketch. Mrs Hamer, later by special request, gave the, ‘ English Bride.’ Mrs White rendered Wo Vocal solos, each having a distinct Australian atmosphere. Mrs J. Veitch gave two recitations (her own compositions); Mrs Chandler’s solo concluded an excellent programme, apd afternoon tea brought to a close an enjoyable jffternobn. The accompanists were Mesdames J. Kerr and E. W. Chandler.
