VALEDICTORY

PROFESSOR A. G. STRONG FAREWELLED Members of the Professorial Board, with their wives and the emeritus professors—Sir William Benham and Dr Cannalt Jones assembled in the Somerset Lounge of the Savoy on Thursday evening, in honour of Professor A. G. Strong, 0.8. E., who is retiring from the position of Doan of the Home Science Faculty of the University of Otago. Dr and Mrs A. R. Andrew received the guests, the latter wearing a gown of black georgette. Mrs Strong wore a most becoming gown of wine-coloured embossed georgette with a cream Indian wrap. The lounge was charmingly decorated with bowls of brilli-antly-coloured ranunculi. Two short plays, read by members of the staff, ‘ Royal Table Manners,’ by Laurence Housman, and ‘ The Little Man,’ by John Galsworthy; were much appreciated. Before supper was served, Sir William Benham, in a very happy speech, eulogised the work of Professor Strong, both in the university and in the outside life of the community, and presented her, from the members of the board,' with a silver tea and coffee service. Professor Strong charmingly acknowledged the gift and thanked all those who had helped to make her work among them so pleasant. Those present were—Professor A. G. Strong, 0.8. E., Sir William Benham.
