N.G. Bro. Stevens presided at the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Cromwell Lodge. Bro. Hooper gave notice of his pending resignation as permanent secretary to take effect from March 31. Members generally deplored Bro, Hooper’s decision, and spoko eulogistically of his service to the brethren during his term of office. The matter of filling the vacancy was held over. At the lodge’s next meeting there will be a visit of the members of the District Executive and members of adjacent lodges. In the latter portion of the meeting P.G. Bro. Butler conferred degrees upon eligible brethren. The usual social hour terminated proceedings. The annual balance sheet presented to the meeting of Loyal Valley Lodge last Monday evening disclosed a satisfactory state of affairs duo to nonrecurring expenditure. The management fund had decreased slightly. The headway made in the S. and F. Fund was nullified by the transfer of the proportion of surplus funds necessary to give increased benefits to members. Other routine business was transacted, and the lodge adjourned to entertain the co-tenants of the hall, lodges represented being Court Pride of the Leith, Forresters, Independent Order of Oddfellows, Protestant Alliance No. 11, and women’s lodges, Pride of the Valley and 1.0.0. F. No. 1, These were welcomed by N.G. Bro. S. Hutton. The preliminary entertainment was progressive euchre. Bro. Robson,_ expressing the pleasure of the lodge in entertaining members of sister societies, stressed the necessity of closer cooperation between friendly societies. While the Social Security Act had failed to function successfully, it had had.,a detrimental effect on friendly societies generally, whereas the merging, of the social security scheme in some aspects with friendly society organisation would have ensured the smooth running of both. Representatives of the various societies returned thanks and expressed agreement with the speaker. The half-yearly past officers’ and purple degree meeting was held in the lodge room of Loyal Dunedin Lodge on Thursday evening. P.P.G.M. Bro. A. Sligo presided throughout, Prov.D.G.M. Bro. 11. Masters acting as secretary. The lectures in the minor degrees were delivered by P.P.G.M; Bro. W. R. Sellar, P.P.G.M. Bro. G. Clark, and P.G. Bro. T. Henderson. In the purple, Bro. Clark gave the obligation; P.P.G.M. Russell delivered the lecture, and P.P.G.M. Bro. E. Lqngworth the exhortation. The examining officers were P.P.G.M. Bro Cameron and P.G. Bro. J. Roberts-Tyler, P.G. Bro. E Niven, while P.P.G.M.’s Bros. Longworth and Lawry conducted the candidates throughout. A vote of thanks was accorded those responsible for the conduct of proceedings.
