FINAL GALLOPS FOR GORE

OTHER SOUTHLAND RAGING NEWS [Special to the * Star.'] 1 INVERCARGILL, February' 8. The tinal gallops by local horses with engagements at Gore took place this morning in atrocious weather. Heavy showers fell throughout the procedmgs, and the going was heavy, particularly in the concluding stages. All the fast work was done on the course proper, where the poles, were 4Q£t out from the rails The going was not really bad when Spendthrift and Colofael Rouge, opened proceedings .by 7 a;unning two furlongs in 25 4-ssec'[ completing four in 52 2-ssec. This was a smart effort, and both horses were doing their work exceptionally over the concluding stages. Colonel Rouge has no engagements at Gore, but Spendthrift may race there on the second day. Sparkle was going better than. Milford at the end of a mile in Imin 54 1- the first four furlongs in 65 2- and the last four in 68 4-ssee. Sparkle is in great order for her Gore engagements, and should race well. Milford may be seen out on the second day. Eire’s Ruin and Baltruin took sSseo for half a-mile, but the former was doing it within herself at the finish. Eire’s Ruin has improved a lot since her outing at Tapanui. Green Locket and Ocean Singer reeled off four furlongs in 55sec, a good effort on the part of Green. Locket. King’s Chorus took Imin ISsec to run five furlongs, but was not bustled at any stage. Waitoru and Remembo were responsible for the best six furlongs of - the morning, when they recorded Imin 24sec, the last four in 57sec. Both horses were running oh well. Waitoru has come on a lot since the Wairio meeting. Ortyx and Heidelberg were together at . the end of six furlongs in Imin 26sec, the last four in 58 4-sseC. Ortyx, who carried over 9st, was doing it better, but both horses could have improved on their time. Ortyx has never looked better, and should show up in her Gore engagements. Aspiro and Blissful Lady were running on strongly at the end of six furlongs, in Imin 26 3-ssec, the last four in 58 3-ssec. Aspire looks a muchimprovedl mare after her outing at Tapanui, and Blissful Lady is also ready to race well. Mona’s Song was sent over a mile, and was picked up by Wild Career at the seven furlongs. The full distance was run in Imin 54 2-ssec, the last seven in Imin 39 3-ssec, and the last four in 58 2-ssec. Both horses finished under a nice hold!, and it was a good gallop, as the track had become very heavy. Sailing Lady, assisted by Ackemma over the last six furlongs, ran a mije in Imin 56sec, the last six furlongs in Imin 27 3-ssec, and the last four in 59 2-ssec. Sailing Lady tired in the going, but Ackemma finished under a good hold; and , could have done much better. Ackemma has improved a lot lately, and may race prominently in the Novice Handicap. Royal Money was not extended to boat My Song over six furlongs in Imin 26 2-sscc, the last four in 60sec. Royal Money handled the going all rio-ht, but My Song was not too happy in’ it. The Nigger Minstrel filly; Melodist, accompanied them over the first two furlongs, which occupied 26 2”ssec Pink Bond and Ashaway were given n useful task over, six furlongs, Pink Bond handling the going well. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. Riding engagements made for the first day of the Gore meeting are G. Barclay-Blissful Lady, Waitoru, and Roval Money: F. Voight—Ortyx, Heidelberg, and Merry Simon; R. E. Humphries—Aspire, Ackemma, Sailing Lady, and Remembo; W. Ellis, King’s Chorus and Mona’s Song; D. Hamill, Silkwood; J. L. Strathern, Sparkle and Eire’s Ruin. If L. J. Ellis comes south he may ride Rodeur, who has been galloping particularly well at Riverton. OTHER ITEMS. Sir Denis will not fulfil his Gore engagements, as he has gone sore and is to be given a spell.

The death occurred a few days ago at the age of 25 years of the brood mare Sweet Memory, by Mahiapoto from Pretty Helen. Sweet Memory; produced the Grand National Hurdle* winner Membo, Paladino,. and Nightcalm, all good winners, and at the tima of her death she had a nine-weeks’-old filly by Salmagundi at foot.' The filly is reported to be doing well. Sweet Memory was 16 years of age when she foaled Paladino, and 19 years when she produced Nightoalm. She was owned by Mr G. F. Scott, of Waipiata, Central Otago.
