TAIERI CLUB'S CARNIVAL W. H. DYSON IN FORM Tho annual carnival of the Taieri Amateur Swimming Club, which was held in the Mosgicl Baths on Saturday afternoon, was the most successful fixture it has held since the baths were opened, there being a representative entry from Dunedin, Balclutha, Milton and Mosgiel. Several of the leading members of Otago’s successful intermediate and junior team took part, as well as a number of those who are competing in the national senior championships at Wellington this week. Racing thoughout was keen, and in spite of the very cold conditions some first-rate performances were registered, three national championship candidiates showing particularly good form being W. H. Dyson, Misses W. Dunn and I. Purdie. Dyson put up a great swim to win the 100yds interclub breast stroke handicap from Winnie Dunn in 76 l-ssec, fast time under any circumstances, but particularly good under such conditions. Dyson was only two seconds outside his own New Zealand record.

An outstanding performer was Jack Stewart, the Now Zealand intermediate boys’ diving champion, who is_ diving with more confidence every time he takes the board. This youthful competitor won the intermediate and junior diving handicaps and the intercluh diving handicap, both from scratch. Of the country swimmers one who impressed was A. Wcthey (Toko.), winner of the 66 2-3yds free style handicap. Ho returned good time and displayed proficent stylo. Toko, put up a good performance to win the interclub relay handicap, with Taieri in second place. The junior and intermediate events provided (keen competition, and here again several good performances were registered, one of the most promising being the 44 l-ssec for 50yds breast stroke by 12-year-old Shirley Harrison. The Taieri Club staged a number of its championship events, which aroused considerable interest. B. Wilkins won tho Feather Cup with 23 points, D. Mitchell being runner-up with 18, and C. Graham third with 10.

A good display of plain and fancy diving was given by Jack Stewart and Douglas Freeman (Otago men’s champion). At tho conclusion of the carnival the Mayor of Mosgiel (Mr W. P. Hartstonge) presented a number of special trophies and congratulated the Taieri Club,on the very successful carnival it had conducted, and on the good work it was doing in fostering swimming In the district.

A well-varied programme was put through without the slightest hitch, the organisation of the fixture reflecting credit upon the president. (Mr W. Muirhead). the secretary (Mr C. G. Lucas), and the starter (Mr Dave Reid). Results:—
