POLICE COURT
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 5. Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender, a youth 17 years of age, was fined 12s 6d. MAINTENANCE CASES. Frank Elias Lloyd, a labourer, was proceeded against by his wife on an application for separation, maintenance, and guardianship orders. The orders were asked for on the grounds of habitual cruelty and failure to maintain.—The wife, who was represented by Mr B. S. Irwin, stated in evidence that there ware nine children.—After hearing evidence the court granted the orders sought, fixing maintenance at £2 a week and solicitor’s fee at 2gs. George Baker (Mr E. J. Anderson) was proceeded against on a complaint for maintenance, separation, and guardianship orders on the grounds of habitual drunkenness and failure to maintain.—Mr D. A. Solomon appeared for the complainant.—After lengthy evidence had been given by the complainant the Magistrate dismissed the application, stating that there was not the slightest evidence to support the charge of habitual drunkenness. So far as failure to maintain was concerned, the complainant had on one occasion refused maintenance, and this position had not since been altered. If, however, the complainant was in destitute circumstances and could satisfy the court that it would be prejudicial to her health’ to return to her husband, she could find relief in that way. REMANDED. Facing two charges, one of having received sums of money totalling £1 18s 6d and failing to account for them, and one of having obtained a sum of £lO by false pretences, Harold John Salmon was remanded until Wednesday next.
