The annual picnic under the auspices of the South Otago freezing works employees was held at Pounawea on Saturday. Heavy rain during the night and a threatening morning no doubt prevented many from patronising the function, and only 100 took the special train from Balclutha. On arrival at Owaka motor lorries conveyed the picnickers to Pounawea, where the committee had the use of the big dining room in the Convention buildings. Here dinner and afternoon tea were partaken of in comfort. The clay turned out fairly good; there was a strong wind, but only a couple of showers, and an interesting sports programme was gone through on the foreshore. There were some excellent finishes, reflecting credit on the handicappers. There were prizes galore, and an abundance of toys/ sweets, and fruit for the children. A number indulged in boating or went for a spin in the motor launch, while others tried their luck with the nets. Altogether the outing was a very enjoyable one, and before leaving for home Mr G. M'Kay thanked all who had helped to make the gathering such a success. The committee responsible for the excellent organisation was Messrs G. H. M'Kay (chairman'), G. Garside (secretary), W.
