SURF LIFE SAVING

CONTESTS AT BRIGHTON ST. HILDA JUNIORS TIE WITH ST. CLAIR The Brighton Shield competition for senior four-men alarm life-saving teams and the Stevenson Cup competitions for junior four-men alarm teams were held at Brighton on Saturday, teams representing the St. Clair, St. Kilda, and Brighton Clubs competing. The display of surf work was impressive, although the cold wind and the poor surf which was running did not help the competitors. The fixture would have been improved considerably if the teams had been quicker out on the mark, a great amount of time being wasted in this way. The first heat of the junior event was won by St. Clair 11. with 62 points out of a possible of 70 points, St. Clair I. scoring 58) points. In the

second heat St. Kilda (63 points) scored a win over Brighton (54 V points). The junior final was spoiled when the two reels became badly tangled, but, nevertheless, a good display was put up. The judges were unable to separate the teams, points being awarded to each. The teams were:—St. Clair lI.—I. Wilson (belt), A. E. Cunningham (patient), R. B. Ingram (line), and M. Myles (reel); and St. Kilda—l. Shaw (belt), T. Fogarty (patient), R. Dunn (line), and G. Brent (reel). The final of the senior contest was won by Brighton 11. with 64 points, which defeated St. Clair I. by half a point. Results of the senior event were:— First Heat.—St. Clair I. (J. G. Reid, A. R. Pritchard, A. Raines, and C. W. Elliott), 60) points, defeated Brighton I. (J. M'Phail, G. Laidlaw, D. Shirley, and A. Mee), 54 points. Second Heat.—Brighton 11. (T. Baxter, D. Shirley, I. Henry, and H. Seelev), 60V points, defeated St. Clair IT. (J. Durand, S. R. Watts, A. Raines, and J. Cranston), 59 points. Final.—Brighton 11., 64 points, defeated St. Clair 1., 63.) points. The trophies were presented by Mr C. Fraser, the president of the Brighton Club, at an enjoyable dance held on Saturday evening.
