INTERPROVINCIAL MATCHES

HAWKE'S BAY BEATS CANTERBURY [Peb United Pbess Association.] NAPIER, August 19. Playing the first match of its northern tour, Canterbury met Hawke’s Bay in fine weather. Neither side claimed any definite superiority in the first half, although the assistance of a fairly strong breeze enabled the visitors to make ground repeatedly with long line finders. On those few occasions when Canterbury’s formidable three-quarters line got under way they were dropped man for man. Cartwright, M’Auliffe, and Ballantyne failed with kicks at goal. Outstanding for Hawko’s Bay were two forwards—Bowman and M'Donald —who repeatedly led loose forward rushes. There were good saves by both full-backs, Dyer (Hawke’s Bay) and Nolan, several times, which ended trouble for their respective sides. Just before the interval Bradley kicked a penalty for Hawke’s bay—3-0. Early in the. second half a speculator by Brady saw Natush gather in and outpace the opposition to score an urn converted try, 6-0. A dribbling rush in which Bowman, Reid, and Frazer were prominent gave Hawke’s Bay the next try; the lastnamed falling on the ball after Nolan had failed to gather it. Bradley -converted. 11-0. Canterbury retaliated strongly from a movement initiated by Ballantyne, and were unlucky in not scoring, Burgess and Roberts in turn being grassed inches short. Canferoury attacked ag&iu, and were rewarded with a splendid try. A scrum went down near the Bay line, and M’Auliffe (Canterbury half) gained possession and nipped through a gap and crossed unchallenged. /The try was not converted, and the final score was: -■ Bay 11 Canterbury 3

[Peb, United Press Association.j NEW PLYMOUTH, August 19. The Taranaki and Auckland representative teams drew, 6 all, in a thrilling encounter that had the crowd on its toes till the end. The rugged, vigorous tactics of the Taranaki forwards, who played their best game of the season, was opposed to the more polished display of the Auckland backs, who, though without Brady, were too strong for the Taranaki rearguard. Pearman was the star of the visiting back line, and M'Lean led his forwards in great style in the closing stages. The brains of the Taranaki team was Killeen, whose defensive work was outstanding. Pearman and Dick scored tries for Auckland, and for Taranaki Walker scored a try and Meuli kicked a penalty. Final; Auckland 6 Taranaki ... 6 ASHBURTON BEATS MANAWATU [Per United Press Association.] ASHBURTON, August 19.
