LOCAL CLUB RUGBY

KAIKORAI HOLD UNION TO DRAW HIGH SCORING IN ALHAMBRA-ZINGARI GAME The -subsidiary Rugby competition was inaugurated in fine weather, but on heavy grounds, with a chilly breeze. The highlight of these encounters was in Kaikorai holding the club champions to a draw. Taieri just got home against Dunedin, and Southern met Pirates as a curtain-raiser to the High School game at Carisbrook, winning an uneventful match by a good margin. incidentally this match chewed the ground up and materially affected the play in the schoolboys’ encounter. In a highscoring game Alhambra finished with a comfortable win over Zingari. A LAST MINUTE WIN ~ THREE PENALTY GOALS TO WILKINS A pleasant, open, carefree game on the Caledonian Ground before about a score of spectators saw Taieri snatch a last-minute win from Dunedin. The teams;— Taieri. Wilkins, Grant, Murray, Kirby, Johnstone, Lindsay, Frew, Law, Boyd, Toms, Walden, Harris, Bissett, Mackie, M'Cartney. Dunedin.—Black Wallace. Hoffman, Scaulan, Spillane, M’Phail, Manion, M’Kwan, Collett, Macartney, Marshall, Faulks, Skinner Berlin, Lowe. Play in the first spell was fairly oven, with both sides throwing the ball about freely. Fifteen minutes from the kick-off Spillane potted a nice goal for Dunedin. Splendid line kicking by Black kept the Blues on attack, but Wilkins, Johnstone, and Grant repeatedly repelled them. At length Taieri took a hand and Wilkins goaled from a penalty. At half-time Dunedin led 4-3.

In the second spell Dunedin had the territorial advantage, but could not score until Black kicked an easy penalty goal. Play became ragged, and Wilkins brought Taieri nearer with another penalty. A couple of minutes before time the Taieri full-back landed a third penalty goal, thus winning tho match for his side. Taieri ...' ... 9 Dunedin ... 7 Mr E: Heather was referee. LIGHT-HEARTED GAME SOUTHERN ACCOUNTS FOR PIRATES There were about 1,000 spectators at Carisbrook to see Southern beat Pirates to the tune of 10 points to nil. Jack Hore came out for an airing with the Magpies, who won on their merits in a lighthearted but uninspiring exhibition which at no stage created enthusiasm among the crowd. Pirates fielded two forwards in their three--quarter line. 7 : The teams: —• 7 Southern. —Backs: Bolton, Blagdon, M‘Leod, Foley, D. Trevathan, T. Trevathan, Robert. Forwards: M‘Donald, Scorgie, Lawson, Holley, Moore, Smith, Fullarton, Sutherland. Pirates:—Backs: Webster, Beadle, Hennessey, M'Lennan, M‘Phail, Rogers, Hawkins. Forwards: Neilson, M‘Lay, Mahoney, Wilson. Parkhill, Cluleo, Reid, Valentine. Southern were in charge from the kick-off, and it took Pirates 10 minutes to get out of their own territory. Webster put them to within 20 yards of the Southern line, and from here Parkhill and McLennan nearly smashed their way through to score. One of the Southern forwards stopped a knock, and was replaced by Jack ilorc. who went into the back row. For the remainder of tho spell the honours (if any) wore fairly even, and just before it ended Dave Trevathan had a shot at goal. The ball struck tho upright, the Southern pack swarmed in, and a moment later Trevathan potted a neat goal. Southern 4, Pirates 0. The second spell resumed at a more lively clip, and in 10 minutes Dave Trevathan increased Southern’s tally with an easy penalty goal. Southern 7, Pirates" 0. Southern were on top in the play that followed, and then Blagdon finished off a bright attacking movement by throwing himself over in the corner, Trevathan failing with the kick. Southern held their lead without a great deal of trouble, and a game that could scarcely be described as a classic ended: Southern 10, Pirates 0 Mr S. Butler was referee.

HOLIDAY FOOTBALL ALHAMBRA-ZINGARI GAME UNINSPIRING Although played with plenty of vigour, the Alhambra v. ZingariRichmond game at Montecillo Ground was imbued with the holiday spirit. Pox, Tappin, Robinson, Fox, Casey. Forwards; Lament, M'Donald, Stewart, Mockfowl, Skinner, Montgomery, Treewick, Allen. Zingari - Richmond. Backs: A. Mason, Barabithe, W. ELEVEN ALL KAIKORAI AND UNION The ground at Bishopcourt, though heavy, was in surprisingly good condition for the match Kaikorai v, Union, which ended in the scores being level. This was a fair indication of the game, both sides being evenly matched Kaikorai.—Spiers, Jefferies, Hanna, Hay, Chapman, Cox, Wood, Whiteside, Ibbotsou, L. Aitken, V. Aitken, Barnes, Davie, MTntosh, Scott.« Union.—Miller, Hayes, Matbewson, Werner, Pollock, M'Kerrow, Samson, Bowling, Jenkins, Anderson, Newall, Gensick, Gibson, Richards, Vorratb. Within the first two minutes Chapman kicked a penalty. Kaikorai were still holding the advantage when Hanna, after several had handled, cut in to score. Chapman converted. 8-0. Union 'then settled down and attacked strongly. A quick heel by Union, and Samson sent Werner away to force his way over. Unconverted. 8-3, A brilliant run by Werner from halfway saw'him evade many taeklers to score behind the posts. Pollock converted. 8 all. Union were having the better at this stage. Repeated back moves were checked by Kaikorai* but M'Kerrow paved the way for a nice try, Mathewson scoring well out. Half-time, 11-8 in Union’s favour. Heavy forward play with occasional endeavours to open up play by both sides was marred by the greasy ball. Quick following up by Kaikorai and fast heeling gave them the equalising try, Hanna scoring with Union well but of position. Even play followed, and the game ended with the scores; Kaikorai . 11 Union 11 Mr E. H. Dickey was the referee. SECOND GRADE. Alhambra 14, Dunedin 4.
