WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIP MISSES COLLINS AND HORWELL BEATEN [Pek United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, October 2G. There were some surprises in the first and second rounds of the Wellington provincial golf championship tournament, which was nlayed on the Heretaunga links to-day. A surprise came early in the first round, when the New Zealand champion. Miss S. Collins (Wellington), was defeated by Miss J. Hornabrook (Mastertou), I up. Another surprise eaine in the second round, when Miss P. Pell (Wanganui) defeated Miss J. Horwell (Timaru), 2 up. Results:— FIRST ROUND, Miss V. Fleming (Christchurch), defeated Mrs T. Ellis (Miramar), 8 and G. Miss J. Duncan (Wanganui), defeated Mrs M’Killop- (Christchurch), 4 and 3. Miss 11. Buchanan (Christchurch) defeated Miss White-Parsons (Christchurch). 4 and 3. Miss C. Smith (Invercargill) defeated Miss D. Todd (Mastertou), 4 and 3. Misfc P. Bell (Wanganui) defeated Mrs Cornaga (Cambridge), 1 up. Miss J. Horwell (Timaru) defeated M iss A. Pritchard (Dannevirke), 4 and 3. Miss J. Hornabrook (Masterton) defeated Miss S. Collins (Wellington), 1 up. Miss D. Crombie (Wellington) defeated Mrs Welton-Hogg (Wellington), 2 up. SECOND ROUND. Miss Fleming defeated Miss Duncan, 4 and 2. Miss Buchanan defeated Miss Smith, 2 and 1. Miss Bell defeated Miss Horwell, 2 up. Mrs Crombie defeated Miss Hornabrook. 4 and 3. Miss Collins and Miss Hornabrook had a great battle, which was notable more for its closeness than for the brilliance of the golf. Both had lapses on the outward journey. Miss Hornabrook took 41 with G’s at the fifth and eighth, and Miss Collins took 42 with G’s at the second and fifth and 7 at the seventh. Miss Hornabrook took 41 on the return journey and Miss Collins 42.
