N.Z. BASKETBALL TEAM
BEATEN IN STATE TOURNAMENT WIN UNDER ITS OWN RULES MELBOURNE. August Playing under Australian rules, Victoria defeated* New Zealand by 48 to 16. New Zealand was continuously penalised for footwork. The Victorian method of playing outside the court made it impossible to intercept its quick passing. The New Zealanders, by contrast, were slower in their movements than the Victorians. M. Matangi was outstanding, and E. Sinclair made good interceptions, but was penalised for footwork. The grass hampered the New Zealanders. The other games resulted ; Tasmania defeated Queensland by 26 to 17, South Australia defeated New South Wales by 45 to 10. Under its own rules, New Zealand defeated Victoria by 19 to 5. The New Zealanders wore happier at their own game and gave a good exhibition. Appearances are favourable for uniform rules after to-day’s exhibition. The New Zealand team was as follows:—M. "Vatangi, J. Mitchell, E. Sinclair. M Martin, M. Howe, E. Neame. E. Howard, J. 'Willson, and J. Tyrrell.
