NEW ZEALANDERS IN SYDNEY AUSTRALIAN CLUB’S TOURNAMENT SYDNEY, August 16. A Dumber of New Zealand golfers participated in an 18-hole stroke handicap for a special 150th anniversary trophy at the Australian Golf Club. The event afforded valuable practice for the open championship, which will be commenced to-morrow, and in which it is anticipated the best of the New Zealanders will figure very prominently. To-day’s competition was won by Miss Hirst, of Victoria, with a net score of 73. Miss Sydney Jones was runnerup with 74 (which is par for the course), and thou followed the New Zealanders Misses Horwell, Buchanan, and Helean with 76 each. The net scores of the other New Zealanders were as follows;—Mrs Fuller-ton-Smith 73, Miss Rutherford 79, Miss Hornabrook 87. Misses lllston and Nutt failed to return cards. Miss Heleau’s 79 was the best gross score and equalled the course record. Miss Horwell’s gross 80 was the next best. Mrs Fulierton-Smith and Miss Buchanan each had a gross score of 82. A high wind made playing difficult. Miss Helean was remarkably steady, scoring 13 pars and being one over at each of the other five holes. But for a couple of duffed tee shots her score would have been even better. Miss Horwell registered 12 pars, but lost strokes at other holes, duo to faulty putting. Mrs Fulierton-Smith is hitting all shots crisply, but her visits to several bunkers to-day were costly. She also had lapses at the greens. Miss Buchanan had a well-balanced card of 41 each way. Misses Rutherford and Hornabrook, whose gross scores were 88 and 94 respectively, were frequently off the line with tee shots.
