STONEMASONS’ CLAIMS HEARING BEFORE ARBITRATION COURT [Put United Phem Association.] _ AUCKLAND, August 17.. Wprking conditions ‘ of ' stonemasons in’New Zealand! were discussed in the Arbitration Court yesterday, Air Justice O’Regan presiding, when the. New Zealand Stonemasons’ Union sought a new award. Air H. 0. Bishop (Wellington) conducted the case for the employers, and Air W. Yennall appeared for the workers. Among the workers’ claims were a 35-hour ■ week, higher wages, and better holiday conditions—-10 days and certain statutory holidays on pay. The wage demands ranged from 3s 6d an hour for stonemasons and others, and to 3s for labourers. _[ Air Bishop, for the employers, disputed the right to a 35-hour week. Hours should) not be altered, 1 he said. He also opposed the clause regarding holidays, and stated 'that a wages offer had been made in the Conciliation Council* as under: Stonemasons, on building work who did not come under the Factories Act, 2s lOJdl an hour; stonemasons. under the. Act, 2s 9d; head polisher, 2s 7d; all other workers, 2s 4d. The court will take time to consider the application.
