NEW ZEALAND LEAGUE TEAM

THE AUSTRALIAN TOUR QUEENSLAND'S EASY WIN ' BRISBANE. June 19. (Received June 19, at 6.30 p.m.) Beaten for the ball in the scrums, New Zealand never had a chance against Queensland in the match yesterday. For a while the forwards, who were led by McNeight and Brodrick, held their own for most of the game; in the closing stages they were simply overwhelmed. The final score was: Queensland 31, Kiwis 11. Although favoured by a breeze m the first half, New Zealand was behind 15—6, and in the second half the visitors could not cope with the brilliance of the Queensland backs, who did what they liked. The fact that Queensland scored seven tries to one was evidence enough of New Zealand’s inferiority, which arose chiefly from the reluctance of their players to tackle the man, preferring to hang off in the. hope that someone else would take him. The only redeeming feature of New Zealand’s play was the magnificent kicking of Hemi. the full-back, who had the crowd of 15,000 on their feet early in the game when he kicked a penalty goal from 10 yards beyond halfway. He finished by scoring eight out of the 11 points scored by the New Zealanders, and hopelessly outplayed Whittle, the Kangaroo full-back, during the whole game. Queensland excelled in cover defence, which was the reason why many attacks which were originated by Brimble, the New Zealand halfback, came to naught. Brodrick and McNeight valiantly tried to stern Queensland’s rushes during the second half, but they were handicapped by lack of support. New Zealand was forced purely on the defence game by the lack of ball from the scrums, Orman being unable to beat Dicksen, who was aided by a liberal interpretation of the scrummage laws by the referee. Tetley was injured during the second half, and Brimble, the halfback, was incapacitated by an illegal tackle when he did not have the ball, but that does not account for the scores, which were reallv due to the failure of the Kiwis to tackle the man with the ball. Tittleton made a few openings. He was backed up by Chase, but lack of support ruined the efforts when tries might have resulted.
