AUSTRALIAN SYMPHONY CONCERTS

PROFESSOR SZELL TO CONDUCT Professor Szell has been selected to conduct this year’s symphony concerts for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He comes from the Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Glasgow, of which he is the principal conductor. For the first time, a larger public heard of Szell when in 1916 Richard Strauss performed his orchestral variations, which were subsequently done in about 60 different cities. When Szell left the State Opera, Berlin, where he had been conductor for some years, he became musical director of the Prague National Theatre, and conducted also the symphony concerts of the Philharmonic Orchestra. I mentioned this feature before, but Szell would like to stress it, as he feels gratitude for the Czechoslovakian Government, and apparently it has- not been mentioned in any other paper. In the last years Professor Szell, besides holding an official position in Glasgow and Prague, has appeared as guest conductor of the most famous orchestras, namely—London : Philharmonic, 8.8. C., and London Symphony Orchestras. Vienna; Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra. Amsterdam : Concertgebouw. Prague: Czech Philharmonic. Budapest: Philharmonic Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, besides concerts with the orchestras in The Hague and in Stockholm. Professor Szell has also made records, only .of major works.
