HEARING THE WORLD

DX THRILLS THIS MONTH FURTHER AMERICANS TO TRY An unbroken spell of peak conditions for reception, such as has been enjoyed during the last three weeks, is unique, and listeners who are competent to judge state that this month is providing DX thrills unequalled in their experience. At the meeting of the Otago headquarters of New Zealand DX Radio Association, held on February 18, two listeners in city locations brought information concerning new Australians they had logged. These were 2LF, Young, New South Wales, operating on 1,340 kc; 7DY, Derby, Tasmania, on 1,400 kc. They also reported reception of numerous American stations; in fact, the meeting was remarkable for the number of Americans quoted as having been heard consistently, as well as the number of rare loggings made during the evening, early morning, and from the frequency check programme. These latter have again been amended, and listeners found the current»lists useless. From the many verifications on view the following were judged the winners in the various zones:— North America: A. Hutchison’s (WNBF). East: F. Wilson’s (XMHA). Australia: A. Stanton’s (6GE). Australian amateur: J. Bulger’s (VK3WE). Station WNBF, located at Binghampton, New York, and _ using 100 watts, was the best verification produced. Although the early morning Americans are not so numerous or so strong as last month, they are still worth consideration, and new loggings are still being made. Try for these—they were heard in town: — % Midnight: KOAM, Pittsburg, 790 kc. WHAS, Louisville, 820 kc. WDOD, Chattanooga, 1,280 kc. KMBC, Kansas City, 950 kc. WIRE, Indianapolis, 1,400 kc. 0.30 a.m.; WDAF, Kansas City, 610 kc. KTUL, Tulsa, 1,400 kc. • The evening Americans are rapidly building up in strength, and several old favourites provide real entertainment. In addition to the stations on regular schedules, a number of DX programmes can be heard. Here are three which should be widely received : February '26: KMO, 1,330 kc, 9-10 February 27; WJBO, 1,120 kc, 7-9 p.m. February 27: KGU, 750 kc, 8.30-9 p.m. Have You Heard? CKLW, Windsor, Ontario. It broadcasts until 9 p.m. on 1,030 kc, and is coming in very well. CKMO, Vancouver, British Columbia, on 1,410 kc. Usually runs late on Sundays, and, although on only 100 watts, sometimes reaches good strength. KFJM, Grand Rapids, North Dakota, on 1,410 kc. Conducts regular DX sessions each Saturday, and last week-end it was heard very well indeed, as was KRLC, Lewiston, on 1,390 kc. Watch for CMBX, Havana, on 1,065 kc, which broadcasts until 9 p.m. or later on Sundays, Evening Americans provide plenty of interest between 7 and 8 p.m. Add to last week’s list the following:— 1,550 kc: KPMC, Bakersfield. 1,530 kc; KXBY, Kansas City. 1,420 kc: KORE, Eugene. 1,380 kc: KOH, Reno. 1,310 kc: KARM, Fresno. 1,290 kc: KDYL, Salt Lake. 1,270 kc: KOL, Seattle. 1,040 kc: KWJ.J, Portland.
