CROSS-COUNTRY RUN

MAXWELL CUP A large field lined up for the Maxwell Cup at St. Kevin’s College, Oamaru. The limit men for the junior championship, at the word from the starter (Mr Maxwell), moved off, and minute by minute the batches left. Then, with the junior scratch men on the way, the seniors stepped into place. Five minutes later those on scratch jumped smartly into the fray. For some time the limit men led, but the hill tested their stamina and gradually the scratch runners shortened the lead. However, there was much ground to make up, and for a while it looked as though Fallon and Tither would be placed. As the juniors passed the front gate Wilkes led from Venning, with Phair lying third. The pace was fast, and the scratch men had almost caught up. It was now a neck-and-neck struggle. Wilkes was first past the post, with Venning second and Phair third. P. Venning set the fastest time with 26min 30sec. Shortly afterwards the first of the seniors was sighted ' near the island. Cartwright had been running well all the way, and he now led from M'Kay, with O’Brien third. C. Hally obtained fastest time with 32min lOsec.

In asking Mr Maxwell to present the trophies, the rector thanked him for his continued interest in St. Kevin’s Besides congratulating the winners on their efforts, he commended the fine performancese put up by all the runners, who had -acquitted themselves creditably. He thanked the Sports Committee for the excellence of the handicapping and the completenss of the arrangements.
