ROSLYN-XAIKORAI RATEPAYERS

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The Roslyn and Kaikoral Ratepayers’ Association’s monthly meeting was held last night, Mr i. L. Ritchie presiding over a good attendance. The Secretary reported having written to the City Council requesting the formation of a footpath on the north side of the Robin Hood quarry road connecting with the downward footpath from the car junction, and he stated that the work had now been commenced. The Scarba street corner at City road was still under review, it was stated, and the hope was expressed that a speedy solution would be forthcoming for the general safety of all concerned. The secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Property wrote stating that it was negotiating with the City Council with reference to repairs and the regrading of Huntley Avenue, and he hoped to report favourably on the matter in the near future. The AVakari Welfare Society wrote asking for the association’s collaboration in approaching the City Council with reference to various works the society wished to be carried out.-—The matter was held over until the next meeting. The Chairman _ referred to the Government’s housing scheme proposals, and stated that Kaikorai Valley should not be neglected in the outlook for available land. The district was a large manufacturing one, he said, and housing was very much required, while the land was plentiful at a moderate cost.—lt was resolved that the secretary write to the authorities concerned pointing out the desirability of the. scheme. The secretary was instructed to write to the secretary of the High Schools Board of _ Governors with reference to the association’s request for a portion of its land_ fronting Higbgate for street widening. purposes.

In Irish terriers competition was not so keen as in the other variety of terriers, A. R. and Mrs Middlemas’s dog, ch. Roscrea Kerry (by ch. Pol'tway, imp.) winning the dog challenge and Mr W. E. Jones’s Kaloni Dierdre (by ch. Bremlon Reaper) that for the other sex. There were some very big classes in Scottish terriers, the opposite sex winner to Heather Guardsman being ch. Strathclyde Wasp, also the property of Mr A. A. White,* of Melbourne.

In Sealyhams about 50 per cent, of the entrants were sired by gd. ch. Hillsomo Pilot (imp.), which dog was entered in the open to get reserve challenge to his half-brother, Scaling Swellman (imp.), both dogs owning famous ch. St. Margaret’s Snowman as sire. Mr A. A. White’s ch. Gunside Boris (imp.) was third, although his other entry, ch. Wannon Artful (by ch. Strathclyde Renown (imp.) collected the bitch challenge. The English setters w'ere a triumph for New Zealand, about 95 per cent, being bred from stock produced on this side of the Tasman, while the best one in the show, Mr C. Johnson’s ch. Dalesford Gay Prince, was bred in Blenheim by Mr Eric Leslie, from ch. Wattle Gay Devon and Rapanui Belle, and w'as sent over to Sydney especially for the show by Mr Johnson, who lives in Nelson.

Irish setters also produced some big classes and sonic outstanding snecimens, both challenge winners, J. Tolhurst’s gd. eh. Marlin King, and A. Forrest’s ch Colleen of Arran, being sired by gd! cb. Wollondilby King. In the big cocker classes the placegetters were either imported dogs or New Zealand productions. Mrs "Kinninmonth. who some time ago purchased some cockers from Mr L. Smythc, was in the money quite a lot with stock bred from these dogs. The opposite sex winner to Midas of Hollymount was Mrs J. Ure-Smith’s ch. Twinkle of Pinscroft, bred near Christchurch by Mr G. Kean, from ch. Cobnar Pip (imp.) and Jipdale.

In West Highland white terriers ch. Bunty of Loclhel, bred by Mrs Bracks, won the bitch challenge for the third time, a son- of this bitch, bv Mrs Bracks's ch. Robin Adair of Rosslyn, having collected the special for best of

the bleed and the dog challenge last year. As quite a number of the dogs bred in New' Zealand are from stock procured originally in Australia, such an enormous lot of dogs of almost every breed being imported into Australia every year, it would appear as though we, over here, have rather more idea of how to follow type, as we certainly turn out some very creditable stock, with very much less assistance from constant importations than they have in Australia.

Mr W. Goodfellow has purchased from Mr W. Millar, of Mosgiel (and until recently of Mornington). the brown retriever pup that Mr Millar was intending to keep for himself. This young bitch is very typey, and her new owner intends to show her and later on to breed, using ns a sire one of the proved field trialers from Christchurch. The litter from which this young bitch came turned out so nice that Mr Millar has returned Sweet Nell to Mrs Shaw’s Master Hoy in the hope that he will get another lot as good. Of the two litters sired by Roy last summer only one pup is left, and Mrs Shaw has this. She is getting him into trim for the show season. This young fellow owns Mr Webb’s Lady June as his mother, and as she is a first-class worker he should shape well when put into work.

Mrs Easton, of Oamaru, has been filling orders for Labrador pups rapidly lately. Of the litter of five from her Lassie of Glenlossie and Mr R. Clear’s Eilyer Ron (imp.) one has gone to Studholmo and one up to Whaugarei, leaving her with just one for herself, the rest having been disposed of some time ago.

Mr 11. W. Brown has a great litter of bull terriers in his Heatherlea Kennels just now. There are three of each sex, and all are pure white but one, which is lightly coloured. The dam is the winning, white bitch gd. ch. Keverno Elvia! an Australian-bred terrier, the sire being the brindlc-and-wbite Heatherlea Kilrush. So far Mr Brown has had no difficulty in quitting his pups, and it is safe to say that what is for sale of this latest lot will not hang fire, as the breed is becoming popular. ,
