COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS

ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL MEETING MR C. L. FINER ELECTED PRESIDENT At the fifty-second annual meeting of the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association held last evening in the club rooms, the president (Mr A. W. Clapp) congratulated members on the association’s sound financial position. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, he said the profit of £25 9s lOd had dropped from last year’s total of £3lO 15s lid owing to an increase in expenses and staff. The central mortuary benefit fund had also assisted in its depreciation, and he was surprised that this scheme was not given , the fullest support by members. Great laxity was shown in this connection, despite the obvious benefits accruing* In conclusion, he hoped that the club spirit and interests would be fostered by all members to attain the objects for which the association had been formed.

Mr C. L. Finer, who seconded the motion, supported the remarks of the chairman regarding the finance of the association, and outlined the benefits of the central mortuary fund. No appreciation could be expected for at least 10 years in the finance owing to the necessity for the maintenance of its balance, but he was sure that its benefits would compensate fully for the reduction.

The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. The president referred to the death of Mr D. V. Gain, who had been president of the association for four years from 1932, and a committee member for about 16 years from 1916. Throughout his membership Mr Gain had been most assiduous in his attention to the welfare and furtherance of the association, and it was with extreme regret that his passing was recorded.—The members stood in silence as a token of respect for their late president, and also for the following other members who had passed away during the year:—Messrs W. Best, W. J. Croft, T. B. Collier, J. H. Fraser, P. J. Leadbetter, T. AV. Robinson. J. Stevenson. R. Stark, D! M. Stuart, H. K. Wilkinson, S. V. White, and AV, A. Lucas (who for 29 years had capably filled the position of house manager). The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted :—President, Mr C. L Finer; vice-presidents—Messrs W. IN. M'Lean, R. S. Glendining, and A. G. Hewitt; committee, Messrs G. F. Avery, R. W. H. Cherry, H. G. Eckhoff. C. J. Jarvis, J. H. Lennox, D. Y. M. Millar, B. M. Rodger, C. V, Smith, A. Wright, and E. G. AATlligms; hon. treasurer, Mr J. T. Gillan; auditor, Mr J. W. Smeatoff. In vacating the chair to Mr Pmer, the president thanked the gathering for the confidence shown in him by the members, and expressed the hope that the improved position of the club would be maintained and advanced at every opportunity. . . Mr Millar spoke in appreciative terms of the services rendered the club by Mr C. AV. L. King, a retiring vicepresident. .
