Shipping men will recall that four other serious collisions have taken place at the scene of the Kakariki disaster. The most serious of these was the collision between _ the s.s. Easby and the s.s. Gambier in August, 1891, in which 25 lives were lost when the Gambier sank. Sixteen years later the Easby was wrecked off Gabo Island. In 1892 the British fulll-rigged ship Cape Verde was anchored off Williamstown, when the sailing ship lolanthe struck her. The Cape Verde was seriously damaged, and sank, but was salvaged in the following year. On April 27, 1898, in the same water, the bay steamer Edina rammed and sank the small Union line steamer Manawatu. As it was feared that the Edina might also sink, she was beached on Point Gellibrand, but it was found that she was only slightly damaged. It is interesting to recall that in July of the following year the Edina collided with the’ hay steamer Excelsior in a fog off Point Cooke. The Excelsior sank, but her passengers were safely transferred to the Edina, which again escaped almost undamaged. Nearly 38 years later the Edina is still making her daily voyage to Geelong. The third mishap near the Gellibrand pile light occurred in the afternoon or August 19, 1925. The interstate steamer Oooma, which was leaving Melbourne, and the Bass Strait steamer Oonah. which was entering the port, collided almost bow to bow. Holes were torn in both vessels, partly below the waterline. The.Cooma was forced to return to port, hut there was no loss of life. IN RADIO RANGE.
