ANNUALS FOR LATE FLOWERING

Half-hardy and hardy annuals are eagerly planted out early in the season with a view to having an early display, and if weather conditions permit the display, is usually forthcoming; but snails and slugs and other factors sometimes take toll of many of the plants, and bare patches result, and* the display does not come up to expectations. The usual early plants are. now in need of thinning out, and in order to provide a late display and, have something to cut from it is advisable to sow seeds of the following Stocks, mathilo bicornis (the nightscented stock), Clarkia olegans, godetias, shirley and doubl<j-flowered poppies, lupins, mignonette, candytuft, marigolds (both French and African,, and dimorphotheca. The seeds may be either sown in drills or broadcast. Sowing, however, depends upon the purpose for which the plants are wanted. If long, narrow borders, then they may be sown in drills to facilitate hoeing and weeding. If to be used in beds of mixed flowers, then they should be sown in clumps, and a good idea is to make circular shallow drills of the required diameter with a pointed stick, sow the seeds in these, cover lightly with soil, and label each clump. When the plants are well up they should, of course, b© thinned out and the thinnings used for filling gaps or planting other bare spaces.' —Taranaki ‘ Herald.’ j ■
