FOR MONSTER ONIONS

To those who like to grow vegetables on a grand scale the following will be useful for developing monster onions; — Start now and repeat at five-day intervals until the bulbs are fully fed. Give two applications of superphosphate, two of nitrate of soda, and finish off with sulphate of potash, of which several dressings may be needed. Of each fertiliser give each plant half a teaspoonful per application. The following will also greatly assist lettuces to heart up:—As soon as the plants are half-grown until the heads are ready for use you feed every five days, using in turn very weak soot water and sulphate of potash, the latter at the rate of loz per yard. When you use the lettuce you will find that not only have they compact hearts, but the flavour possesses that nutty freshness which denotes high quality. Don’t allow any liquid soot water or dry fertilisers do touch the foliage, and where the need arises water in the dry ones ; otherwise they can do no good at all.—Marlborough ‘ Express.’-
