PRESBYTERIAN BIBLE CLASSES

ANNUAL FESTIVAL The first session of the annual choral and elocutionary competitions festival of the Otago District Committee of the New Zealand Presbyterian Young Women’s and Young Men’s Bible Class Unions was held in the Little Theatre on Saturday night, before a large attendance. There were good entries for all the competitions, and the lengthy programme was carried through in a commendable manner. Miss K. Wilson was the official accompanist for tho evening. The results are as follow: Play Reading (Open), Own Selection. —Knox (‘Pyramus and Thisbe’) 1, Mornington (‘ Catherine Parr ’) 2. The judge (Mr S. G. Lock) said that all the readers needed to remember the necessity for speaking out. The Knox competitors were excellent speakers, but Mornington did not read so well. The reader of Henry VIII. must remember that the audience required time to laugb. Humorous Recitation (Under IS). Own Selection.-—Miss C. Justin _ (80 points.) 1. Miss C. Wallace (79 points) 2. Misses Ivy Williams and J. Malcolmsou (70 points, equal) 3.

Tho competitors were respectively from the Caversham, Mornington, and Mosgiel Bible Classes. Ladies,’ Solo (Under 18). Own Selection.—Miss M. Martin (82 points) 1, Miss K. Begg (80 points) 2, Miss Winifred Wilson (78 points) 3. The judge (Mr G. E. Wilkinson) said that Miss Martin’s voice had a pleasing quality, and the general effect was very good. _ Miss Begg went slightly off pitch, in the upper notes. Sho had a fair pronunciation, and had a promising voice. Miss Wilson was inclined to accent inexpressive words, and sang too softly at the end of the song. Ladies’ Duet (Open), Own Selection. —Misses M. and P. Robertson (80 points) 1, Misses P. Harvey and B. Dagger (79 points) 2, Misses M. Lamg and N. Ferguson (70 points) 3. The Judge said the intonation of tho Misses Robertson was faulty, but they showed promise. Tho second pair had good blend and intonation. Misses Laing and Ferguson had very pleasing voices, but their intonation was sometimes faulty.
