LATE SPORTING

TRENTHAM TRACK WORK [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 4. With a very stiff frost following recent stormy weather work at Treiuham ibis morning could not bo commenced till after 9 o’clock. The sky was cloudless and there was no wind. The track was hard at first, but softened as it thawed. Not a great deal of fast galloping was done, though there are about JO visitors now on the scene. The most interesting work of the morning was a school over five permanent fences by seven horses. They were Diamond (it. Smith), Hoyal Banquet (R. C. Miles), Electric Flash (J. Sharkey), Dozie (W. James), Count Willonyx (D. W. BuSh), Miss Winston (V. Langford), and Palm (G. Ridgway). Diamond was always in front with Royal Banquet and Electric Flash next, and he gave a capital display. All the horses, however, jumped well, the only poor effort being that of Royal Banquet at the big brush. Palm impressed) as looking very well this winter.

Over the same fences Gascille (A. Gilmer) led Lycidas (N. Trillo) till the fourth obstacle (the big brush), where he just scrambled over. Gascille looks a risky jumper, but Lycidas fences soundly. Owing to a stifle wound which he suffered at Wingatui and) which is still open, Dunmnre (ridden by V. Langford) was schooled on the inside, first jumping two hurdles and then four of the bigger obstacles. His fencing was perfect, and his trainer believes he will be all right for Tuesday’s steeples. There were only a cquple of bouts over hurdles—Travelling Agent (W. Rennie) and Black Man (F. Thomson), the first jumping two fences. Silk Sox (T. Williams) and Te Rangitumau (C. Burgess) followed with the same task, and they all acquitted themselves satisfactorily. Galloping was done oil the trial grass which was holding after a thaw had set in, but otherwise was in good winter order. The outstanding _ trial was that of Boomerang, who slipped right away after half a mile of a mile and completely spread-eagled Arctic King and Korero. .running the full distance in Imin 40 2-ssec and easing off over the last half in 56scc. Despite the advantage ’in weight, Boomerang was responsible for a really excellent performance and he was right at home in the conditions. Ban try finished on much too well for Golden Anne and Lackalady over five furlongs in Imin 7sec, the last half being run in 53sec. Mustang just ns comfortably beat Hunting Maid and First Chapter over the same trip in the same time and section. Both these could have done better, but so could have First Chapter, who does not come in till the final day next week. Greek Gold beat Royal Gallant by half a length over an easy sis furlongs in Imin 24sec. Windward, though stopping badly, held off Revival by a neck at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 35 3-ssec, the last half in sGsec. Rose Val was three lengths ahead of Ayresleigh over seven furlongs run in Imin 37see, the last half in 54sec. The majority of the other horses did serviceable tasks only. They included Vocal, Braw Lad, Dollar Bill. Silver Brier, De Friend, Adalene, Billy Boy, and Red Sun.

Additional scratchings are Royal Songster and l Royal Bengal for all engagements and High Test for the Woburn Handicap. The Ranger is-an unlikely starter at the .meeting.
