PROGRESS OF WIDENING REPORT TO HARBOUR BOARD A progress report on tlio work of widening the Leith canal under the flood protection scheme was made to the Harbour Board last night by the engineer (Mr J. M‘G. Wilkie). The report stated that during March the bottom of the excavation between Forth street and Harbour Terrace was levelled off ready for laying the concrete floor slab, and the material used to fill in behind the new wall. The wall of the new channel has boon completed for a total length of 348 ft between Forth street and Harbour Terrace, where a gap has been left to give temporary access by means of an earthwork ramp to the bottom of the new channnel during construction work. A further length of 48ft of wall was completed between Harbour Terrace and Anznc Avenue. The foundation beam carrying the wall has been completed a length of 624 ft. The anchor beam has been completed and tie rods concreted up for a length of 348 ft. Fortyeight feet of concrete floor was placed. The progress during the month was ns follows:— Foundation beam, 39G lineal feet: main-wall. 228 lineal feet; anchorage beam, 201 lineal feet; floor slab, 48 lineal feet.
Approximately 950 tons of gravel were removed from tho canal between Forth street and tho Anzac Avenue bridge and deposited on the board’s land between Anzac Avenue and the bid cement works. This material was brought down by tho flood on March 9.
