“THE GREATEST COLT”
GOLD ROD LAUDED AMAZING BURST OF SPEED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, March 2. (Received March 2, at 11.10 a.m.) The Sydney ‘ Morning Herald’s ’ sporting writer, commenting on Regular Bachelor’s feat in winning both the Futurity and the Newmarket in one year, says; He is one of the few to win the classic double, others being Gothic, Soultine, and Sir Foote. Regular Bachelor, which was bred and owned in Queensland, and ridden by a Brisbane jockey, appeared to have no chance shortly after the start of Saturday’s race. He must have been ten lengths behind the leader, _ with at least 12 horses in front of him at the half-mile post. His host of admirers feared the worst, when suddenly they observed him stage, an amazing run, so that he had the race entirely within his keeping fifty yards from the post. Other writers state that the jockey, Tanwan, the rider of the winner, owed his success to advice given by M‘Carten, who oftimes has ridden down the Newmarket straight. He recommended Tanwan not to be in too great a hurry, but to let the others go early, and’ give his mount time to settle down. The ‘ Telegraph’s ’ correspondent, referring to Gold Rod, declares he is now being lauded as the greatest colt of all time. If he is not, then he is rapidly justifying it, as no two-year-old ever won the Sires Produce Stakes with such a burst of real brilliance.
