Hon. Isabel Monckton and Hon*. Celia Monckton, who have been the guests of Miss Mill at Wanaka, travelled by the express to-day on their return to Wellington. Mr A. S. Bird (formerly Inspector of Police at Timaru), who has been visiting the south, left .this morning oa his way back to Timaru. Members of the Taieri River Trust, Messrs W. Hartstonge, H. AV. Wilson, and G. Lyall, were passengers by the express to-day, bound for Wellington as a deputation to the Minister of Finance. They were accompanied by Mr A. Campbell, M.P. Mr Justice Johnston joined the express at Timaru,to-day, bound for Wellington. ■ Suitable recognition of his 46 years’ service to the Dunedin City Fire Brigade is to be made when Superintendent J. J. Salmon, who retires next Saturday, returns from a holiday in the North. Island. Mr A. Pybus, M.Sc., is leaving to take up an appointment in the enei- / ueering research department of the General Post Office, Wellington. Last night he was presented with a travelling rug and dressing set by the choir of the Methodist Memorial Church at Port Chalmers. ■ . The appointment "of the following lecturers to the Wellington Teachers Training College has, been approved by the Minister of Education:—Messrs. E. Jenner, at present at the Christchurch Training College; R. Hipkins, at present on the' staff of, the Wellington Technical College; •W- J. Scott, of the Timaru Boys’ High School; R. ~,G. Lockhart, agricultural instructor in the Hawke’s Bay education district; Miss M. J. Browne, of the Hutt Valley High School; and Miss M. M. Hanham, arts mistress at St. Matthew’s Collegiate School, Masterton. , The principal ,' and vice-principal have yet to be appointed, Several other lecturers have, also to be appointed.—Press Association. , • .Prior to their. departure from Karitane, Mr G, Burton, head master of the local school, and Mrs ‘Burton were entertained at a social and dance in the Puketeraki Hall. Mr D. Harper, chairman of the Sbhool Committee, presided, ■ and spoke, of Mr Burton’s excellent work in the school for the past six fears’, and of the many activities' of Irs Burton in the district. On behalf of parents and residents the chairman presented Mr Burton with a silver tea service, suitably inscribed. Colonel Francis Braithwaite," who was military A.D;O. to the Governor of New Zealand (Lord 'Plunked) from 1904 to 1910, is at present visiting the Dominion. Colonel Braithwaite (then captain) was one of the most popular figures in Vice-regal circles during the last few years of the old Government House in Bowen street. His fellow A.D.G. in those days was the Hon. Arthur Maurice Robert Bingham, of the sth Lancers, who is now the sixth Lord . : Clanmorris, of County Galway, Ireland, Lord Plunket’s secretary was Mr H. C. Waterfield, who was killed in the Great War. • The death occurred at Invercargill on : Monday, after a short illness, of Rita Ethel, wife of Mr' Panton Carnegy Gardner, of Clifden, and daughter of the' late Alexander and Mrs Gillies, of Dunedin. Mrs Gardner was educated at the University of Otago and -graduated M. 8., Ch.B. (N.Z.), in 1921. For the next three years she held the position of house surgeon at the Southland Hospital, and then went to Tuatapero where she practised her profession until 1928. In July, 1929, she married Panton, son of Mr and Mrs Carnegy Gardner, of Clifden. A Press Association cable message from London states that the King has approved the appointment, of Sir' Arthur Richards, Governor and Com-mander-in-chief of. Gambia, as Governor and Commander-in-chief of Fiji and High Commissioner .for the Western Pacific, in succession to Sir A. G. M. Fletcher, who has been appointed Governor and Commander-in-chief of Trinidad and Tobago. . . A-Wellington Press Association telegram states that Sir ■ Francis Bell is .seriously ill. . ... ■, ' 'A Hamilton Association message records the death suddenly, of Mr William Henry West, (64), house manager of the Waikato Hospital, a well-known chemist and sportsman. He was born at Timaru, and for many years was on the staff of .the Parke, Davis'Pro- i prietary,' Australia, before obtaining a position at Waikato- Hospital 20 years ago. ; For a lengthy period of. this term he fulfilled the position of Kouse ; manager.
