CANTERBURY WHEAT CROP

DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £SOO,ODD ONE-THIRD OF BARLEY CROP LOST [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, February 24. Damage to the Canterbury wheat crop caused by the recent rains is estimated at £500,000 by Mr H. E. West chief chemist of the Wheat Research Institute. This represents the drop in prices from the return which would have been received had the crop been sold for milling and the price which the grower will now get. It is also estimated that one-third of the barley crop has been lost. Mr West based his estimate on an area representing 4,000,000 bushels which were affected in some stocks which he examined yesterday. Sprouting had already commenced, and bakers could not use more than 1 per cent, of the sprouted grain in bread mixture.
