PEDESTRIAN'S STIFF NECK

MISSED DEATH BY INCH There is a lucky man walking the streets of Dunedin to-day with a stiff neck. He missed _ having his neck broken by a fraction of an inch on Saturday. It was an amazing escape from death which the man had—and the surrounding circumstances were so unusual, too, that even liis best friends will be justifiably incredulous if he gives his explanation for the crick in his neck. He was walking in High street when a motor car coming out of a right-of-way sounded its horn. He waited till it ‘had passed and then stepped forward. If he had looked groundwards he would have seen a taut tow-rope behind the car. His failure to look to right and left and up and down nearly cost him his life. As he moved across the right-of-way he tripped over the tow-rope and fell on the muddy footpath directly in front of the towed vehicle. His neck was directly m the course of the right-hand front wheel, and the wheel actually came to rest, suddenly, on his neck, which was pressed on to the ground. Another slight turn forward and the wheel would have passed over his neck, which would certainly have been broken.
